On the day of Gowri pooja, married women and young girls, after bathing,
wear new silk clothes, perform pooja, offer prayers to symbolic idol of goddess Gowri (mother of
Ganesha & wife of Shiva) which is either made out
of turmeric powder or beautifully painted and decorated clay idol (Eco-friendly idol these days) which are
available to buy at the local Indian markets.
Ganesha festival on the other hand, lasts for 10 to 20
days which is observed in the lunar month of “bhadrapada Shukla Paksha
Chathurthi”. The authentic festival
dishes are Obbattu for Gowri festival and kadubu or modak for Ganesha festival.
Public celebrations of the Ganesha festival is extremely popular in India and abroad with local communities joining hands together to make arrangements for setting up bigger idols and the pendal including cultural activities like singing & dancing. In the modern era, Ganesha celebrations have become popular and critical economic activity in Bangalore, Mumbai, Hyderabad, Chennai and other Indian states.
