BENGALURU ADIGE - Huli Tovve | ಹುಳಿತೊವ್ವೆ




Huli Tovve (ಹುಳಿತೊವ್ವೆ) - is a spicy & sour curry variety from the State of Karnataka in India.  This dish is prepared during auspicious occasions such as weddings and festivals as an accomplishment with rice and chapatis.  Here is my version of preparing this dish which I learnt from my mother who is a great cook.

Ingredients
  • Mixed vegetables of your choice - 1 cup
  • toor dal (togari bele) - 1 cup
  • salt to taste
  • Jaggary powder 1-2 tsps.
  • Tamarind juice to taste
  • pinch of hing powder
  • pinch of turmeric powder
  • few curry leaves
  • mustard seeds for seasoning - 1 tsp.
  • 1 tsp. each of cooking oil and ghee (clarified Indian butter)
For spice powder  

  • Roast - dry red chillies (to taste), coriander seeds (2 tsp.), cumin seeds (1tsp.), methi seeds (1/2 tsp.), cinnamon stick (1/2")
  • 1/2 cup hurigadale (ಹುರಿಗಡಲೆ) & 2 tsp. white poppy seeds (ಗಸಗಸೆ)
  • Blend into smooth powder


Method

  • Pressure cook toor dal and cut vegetables until tender
  • Heat oil and ghee in a pan, season with mustard seeds and curry leaves, hing & turmeric powders
  • add blended spice powder mix, add cooked toor dal and vegetables
  • add tamarind juice and jaggary powder, add salt to taste
  • simmer this huli tovve for few minutes
  • serve hot with plain rice with a tsp. of melted ghee on top
