Savoury Scones
A scone is a western cuisine, single-serving cake or quick bread which are usually made out of wheat, oatmeal or barley with baking powder as a leavening agent and are baked on sheet pans. They are often lightly sweetened, occasionally glazed and also available in savory versions. This is served as a breakfast food or a light snack item in Australia, America and Europe which are available in both savoury and sweet versions.
This is my version of baking savoury scones by just using simple vegetables, herbs & spices which tastes similar to the ones that are available at cafe's in Australia.
INGREDIENTS
- 2 cup plain flour
- 3 tsps baking powder
- salt to taste
- pepper powder to taste
- Red chilli flakes to taste (for extra spicy flavour)
- 1 tsp sugar
- 1/3 cup unsalted soft butter (cold)
- 1/4 cup each of fresh chopped parsley & basil leaves (dry parsley & basil can be used)
- 1 each of finely chopped onion, tomato and grated carrot
- 1/4 cup each of buttermilk & milk (for soft texture)
METHOD
- In a large bowl, add all the ingredients and combine well (don't over mix as it will toughen the scones)
- Gently knead scone dough for 10 minutes
- Grease an oven tray or line with baking paper
- Divide the dough into 6-8 pieces and place them on a greased or lined oven tray
- bake for about 15 minutes (or until golden brown) in a pre-heated oven @ 200 deg. C
- Can be served hot or warm with a cup of tea or coffee... Enjoy!!!
